Why You’ll Love This Nutella Waffle Recipe

  • Decadent Treat - Unlike regular waffles with Nutella as a topping, this waffle recipe blends Nutella directly into the batter, giving every bite a rich, chocolate-hazelnut flavor.
  • Easy to Make – With simple ingredients and minimal prep time, you can whip up these waffles effortlessly for breakfast, brunch, or dessert. This is our goto weekend breakfast!
  • Versatile & Customizable – Enjoy them plain, or top them with extra Nutella drizzle, fresh fruit like berries or bananas, whipped cream, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar for an extra treat.
  • Kid-Friendly & Crowd-Pleasing – Whether you're making these for kids or serving them at a brunch gathering, they’re guaranteed to be a hit!
  • Great for Make-Ahead & Freezing – These waffles freeze well and reheat beautifully in the toaster or oven, making them perfect for busy mornings.

What to Serve with these Nutella Waffles

Whether you're in the mood for a simple drizzle over warm waffles or a decadent sandwich stuffed with fresh fruit and Nutella, there are endless breakfast ideas with Nutella to start your day on a sweet note. Pair it with a hot coffee or a fresh fruit smoothie for a breakfast that feels like a treat every time! Here are some of my favorite pairings!

  • Fresh Fruits – Serve these waffles with fresh fruits like strawberries, whose slight tartness balances the sweetness of Nutella. Bananas are a classic combination, while mixed berries enhance the chocolate-hazelnut flavor.
  • Extra Toppings – Nutella waffles are delicious on their own, but you can take them to the next level with toppings like a warm drizzle of Nutella, light and airy whipped cream, a dusting of powdered sugar, crunchy nuts, or shredded coconut for a tropical touch!
  • Syrups & Spreads – Maple syrup is a classic choice, but for a different flavor, try a drizzle of caramel sauce, almond butter, or peanut butter.
  • Drinks – A classic vanilla bean latte pairs beautifully with Nutella’s sweetness, while a salted caramel latte offers a rich, contrasting flavor.

Ingredients and Sustitutions

To make these delicious Nutella waffles, you'll need a few simple ingredients that come together for the perfect crispy yet fluffy texture. Let's see the ingredients needed below!

Ingredients spread over on pink hue background for making quick and easy nutella waffles.
  • All-Purpose Flour – The base of the waffle batter, giving structure and fluffiness. If you're looking for a healthier option, swap it with whole wheat flour for added fiber, or use gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version. I have tested this recipe with kodiak protein pancake mix for that extra protein and still it tastes great!
  • Baking Powder – The secret to light, fluffy waffles! It helps the batter rise and creates that perfect crisp-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside texture.
  • Salt – A pinch of salt balances the sweetness and enhances the chocolate-hazelnut flavor. If using salted butter, you can reduce or skip the added salt.
  • Eggs – Provide structure and help the waffles stay soft and fluffy inside. If you're out of eggs or need a vegan option, replace each egg with ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce or a flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 tablespoon water, mixed and rested for 5 minutes).
  • Milk – Keeps the batter smooth and adds moisture. You can use buttermilk for extra fluffiness, or substitute with almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk for a dairy-free option.
  • Nutella – The main ingredient for this waffle recipe! It infuses the batter with a rich, chocolate-hazelnut flavor.
  • Vanilla Extract – Enhances the overall flavor with a warm, sweet aroma.
  • Melted Butter – Adds richness and helps create crispy edges. Use vegetable oil, melted coconut oil, or even Greek yogurt for a slightly healthier alternative.
  • Strawberries - To serve with waffles. But any fruits like berries, bananas, sliced apples works too!

Variations

Want to switch things up? Here are some fun and delicious variations of Nutella waffles to suit different tastes and occasions!

  • Double Chocolate Nutella Waffles  - Add ¼ cup extra cocoa powder and ¼ cup chocolate chips to the batter for a richer, double-chocolate experience.
  • Banana Nutella Waffles - Mash ½ ripe banana into the batter for a naturally sweet, moist waffle.
  • Nutella-Stuffed Waffles - Instead of mixing Nutella into the batter, add a spoonful of Nutella between two layers of batter in the waffle iron for a gooey, stuffed center. I use this method when I am making pancakes!

Equipment

  • Waffle Maker - A good-quality waffle iron ensures crispy edges and a fluffy interior.
  • Mixing Bowls – One for dry ingredients and another for wet ingredients, making it easier to mix everything smoothly.
  • Whisk or Hand Mixer – Helps combine ingredients evenly, especially when mixing Nutella into the batter.
  • Measuring Cups & Spoons – Ensures accurate measurements for the perfect waffle texture.
  • Spatula – Great for folding the wet and dry ingredients together without overmixing.

Storage & Reheating Tips for waffles with nutella

Storing Leftover Waffles:

  • Place completely cooled waffles in an airtight container or resealable bag. Separate layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking. The waffles stay fresh for 3 days.
  • Lay waffles in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze for 1-2 hours until firm. Transfer to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container with parchment paper between layers. Staying fresh for 3 months.

Reheating Nutella Waffles:

  • Toaster – The best method for a crispy texture. Heat frozen or refrigerated waffles on a medium setting until warm and crisp.
  • Oven – Preheat to 350°F (175°C), place waffles directly on the oven rack or a baking sheet, and bake for 5-7 minutes.
  • Air Fryer – Heat at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes for crispy results.

Top Tips for Making the Best Nutella Waffles

  • The nutella might be slightly thick, so heating the Nutella (10-15 seconds in the microwave) makes it easier to blend into the batter without clumping.
  • Don’t overmix the batter, stir until just combined.
  • A fully heated waffle iron ensures crispy edges and even cooking. So make sure the waffle iron is hot enough before pouring the batter.
  • Placing hot waffles directly on a plate can make them soggy from trapped steam. Instead, let them cool slightly on a wire rack for maximum crispiness.
  • Lightly grease the waffle iron with cooking spray or melted butter to prevent sticking and achieve golden, crispy waffles.
  • Use a ⅓ or ½ cup measuring cup to pour the batter, ensuring consistent waffle size and avoiding overflow.

FAQ

Can I make the waffle batter ahead of time?

Yes! You can prepare the waffle batter and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Just give it a gentle stir before using.

Can I freeze Nutella waffles?

Absolutely! Let them cool completely, then freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet before transferring to a freezer bag. They can be stored for up to 3 months.

Can I make these waffles without eggs?

Yes you can! Replace each egg with ¼ cup applesauce or a flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 tablespoon water, mixed and rested for 5 minutes).
