These colorful and fun 4th of July jello shots are the perfect patriotic party treat. They’re easy to make, though they take a bit of time to set, and disappear just as quickly! My advice: make a big batch. I love serving them every year alongside a 4th of July Flag Cake, since the red, white, and blue layers match the American flag beautifully and pair perfectly with the soft, fluffy cake.

The best part? Kids and adults love them alike. The whole layering process is fun and exciting. My kids love to join me whenever I make them. These red, white and blue jello shots look just like a mini edible flag in a cup. They’re perfect for parties, summer BBQs, or any patriotic gathering.

These 4th of July jello cups are eye-catching yet simple. They’re sweet, creamy, and refreshing, with each layer adding a different texture and flavor. Why am I a huge fan of these jello cups? They are completely customizable and surprisingly easy recipe once you get the layering right.  Add fruit toppings, add food color to the whipped cream, or serve them without any toppings at all! You have so many options.

If you want more easy party ideas, my Strawberry Santas, Cake pops , brownie cake pops, and Christmas Crunch can easily be adapted with red, white, and blue colors for a fun twist. If you’re craving something refreshing, try the Lemon Mini Bundt Cake or my soft and fluffy Red Velvet Cake Wafflesfor a fun brunch-style addition

Ingredients And Substitutions For Patriotic Jello Shots

These July 4 jello shots are the perfect treat to celebrate the fourth of july and all your favorite summer holidays. With a little prep and enough time to chill, you’ll get those beautiful perfect layers using vibrant strawberry jello along with the other colors for a festive look. Lets see the ingredients below.

Ingredients laid out for making Fourth of july dessert table featuring colorful layered jello shots
  • Strawberry Jell-O: Creates the vibrant red base for your Red white and blue jello shots. You can swap with cherry jello if you like. Make sure you choose red, not pink.
  • Blue Jell-O: Blue raspberry or berry flavor works best for that bold patriotic look in your American flag jello shots.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: This gives the white layer its creamy texture and signature sweetness. You can substitute it with sugar free condensed milk or dairy free condensed coconut milk.
  • Unflavored Gelatin: You’ll need it to give structure to the condensed milk. It will set the white layer properly so the red and blue parts hold their shape.
  • Heavy Cream: For topping. You can substitute it with coconut cream for a dairy-free option. Or use store-bought cool whip instead.
  • Powdered Sugar: It makes heavy cream become sweet and fluffy.
  • Patriotic Sprinkles: Optional, but highly recommended for a festive finish on your 4th of July jello shots. You can substitute them with red, white, and blue sprinkles, shredded coconut. Topping with maraschino cherry is also a wonderful option.
  • Water: To dissolve jello. Water can be replaced by ½ cup of vodka for adult version of jello shot recipes.

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions (How To Make 4th Of July Jello Shots)

Make the Blue layer

Blue Jello being added to the bowl

In a bowl, dissolve blue Jell-O in 1 cup boiling water. Stir for 2 minutes. Stir in ¾  cup cold water.

In a glass blue layer being set.

Pour into cups, filling each about ⅓ full. Chill 45–60 minutes, or until set.

Make the white creamy layer

Condensed milk being added to the gelatin bowl

In a small bowl, sprinkle unflavored gelatin over ½ cup cold water. Let bloom for 5 minutes. To the bloomed gelatin add ¼ cup of warm water and whisk until fully dissolved. Whisk in sweetened condensed milk and mix until smooth.

White layer being poured to set in a glass bowl.

Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes (so it won’t melt the red layer), then gently pour over the set red layer to fill each cup to about ⅔ full. Chill 60–90 minutes, until set.

Make the red layer (strawberry)

Strawberry jello being prepared in a glass bowl

In a bowl, dissolve strawberry Jell-O in 1 cup boiling water. Stir for 2 minutes. Stir in ¾  cup cold water, then gently pour over the set white layer, filling close to the top.

Red jello layer being added to the white layer

Chill for 2 hours, or until fully set.

To Finish

Whipped cream in a piping bag ready to decorate

To a bowl; add heavy cream and powdered sugar. Whisk until stiff peaks. Transfer it to a piping bag.

Red, white and blue jello shots being decorated with whipped cream.

Garnish the jello cups on top of the blue layer. Top with patriotic sprinkles right before serving.

They’re a fun way to serve something unique at your gathering and are always a big hit during patriotic holidays, whether you’re hosting a backyard BBQ or heading to a party.

Hint: Let each layer set fully before adding the next, this is the key to getting clean, defined red, white, and blue layers.

Variations For Red White And Blue Jello Shots

  • Berry Blast Jello Cups — Add fresh chopped strawberries and blueberries between layers for a fruity twist on these red, white and blue jello shots. It enhances both texture and flavor.
  • Cream Cheese and Jello Cups — Swap part of the condensed milk with softened cream cheese for a richer middle layer. This gives your 4th of July jello cups a deep cheesecake flavor.

FAQ

Why are my jello shots layers mixing?

Your previous layer may not have fully set, or the liquid was too warm. Always cool slightly before pouring.

Can I make these 4th Of July Jello Shots ahead of time?

Yes! These 4th of July jello shots are perfect for prepping a day in advance. Prepare and layer the jello cups. Top them with whipped cream and sprinkles just before serving.

Can I turn these into alcoholic 4th Of July Jello Shots?

Yes, you can replace part of the cold water with alcohol, but keep ratios balanced so the jello cups are still set properly.

How do you make layered 4th of July jello shots?

To make layered 4th of July jello shots (red, white, and blue), prepare each layer separately and allow each one to fully set before adding the next. Start with the blue layer, followed by the creamy white layer, and finish with the red layer for a clean, patriotic look.

How long do jello shots need to set?

Each layer of jello shots needs about 1–2 hours to set, and fully layered jello shots typically take 4–6 hours total chilling time. For best results, refrigerate overnight before serving.

What alcohol works best for jello shots?

Vodka is the most popular choice for jello shots because of its neutral flavor, but you can also use coconut rum or white rum for a sweeter taste that pairs well with fruity jello flavors.

What cups are best for 4th of july jello shots?

Small plastic shot cups with lids (1–2 oz) work best for party jello shots. They’re easy to stack, transport, and serve at events like Fourth of July parties and BBQs.
