The Secret Behind the Perfect Chocolate Mousse With Nutella

I’ve personally tested countless Nutella mousse recipes—including the popular two-ingredient nutella mousse version, but let’s be honest, they just don’t hold up! While they might be easy to make, they deflate too quickly and lack that light, airy, and silky-smooth texture we all crave in a perfect mousse.

So, what’s the secret ingredient that makes this Nutella Mousse flawless every time? Melted chocolate!

Adding melted dark chocolate not only helps the mousse set properly, but it also creates that luxurious, rich, and creamy consistency that stays stable, even at room temperature! Unlike the basic two-ingredient mousse, which loses its texture after sitting out, this recipe holds its shape beautifully for hours while staying light and airy.

So if you’ve been searching for that perfect Nutella Mousse, look no further! This recipe checks all the boxes—silky, smooth, rich, decadent, and stable enough to impress at any occasion. Give it a try, and I promise you’ll never go back to the basic version again!

What to Serve with this chocolate hazelnut mousse cups

Nutella Mousse is delicious on its own, with a rich Nutella cream base and an airy whipped cream mousse, every bite is silky-smooth and irresistibly indulgent. But pairing it with the right treats can take it to the next level! Here are some perfect accompaniments!

  • Toppings: For even more chocolatey goodness, add shaved chocolate. For extra crunch, sprinkle chopped hazelnuts, almonds, or macadamia nuts, just like I did in this recipe. You can make it even richer with a chocolate or caramel drizzle and if you’re feeling extra indulgent, a scoop of ice cream works too!
  • Fresh fruits: Strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries add a refreshing contrast to the mousse. Banana slices will be a classic pairing!
  • Cookies: The crisp texture of biscotti perfectly balances the smooth mousse. Sometimes, a chewy cookie like an oatmeal butterscotch chocolate cookie can also be a wonderful pairing!
  • Beverage Pairings: A bold espresso or coffee provides the perfect contrast to the sweet mousse. You can also pair it with a Salted Caramel Latte or a Vanilla Bean Latte for a deliciously cozy combination!
  • For another creamy chocolate dessert, try my Mini Chocolate Bundt Cakes or the indulgent Pumpkin Mug Cake

Ingredients & Substitutions for no-bake Nutella dessert

This easy Nutella chocolate mousse recipe is made with just a few simple ingredients yet delivers an incredibly creamy texture. The result is a light and airy Nutella whipped cream mousse that’s full of chocolate-hazelnut flavor in every spoonful.

Ingredients needed for nutella chocolate mousse being laid out on a pink background.
  • Heavy Cream – The base of the mousse, giving it a light and airy texture. Make sure it’s cold for the best whip! You can substitute coconut cream for a dairy-free option.
  • Powdered Sugar – Adds just the right amount of sweetness while keeping the mousse smooth. If you prefer less sweetness, you can reduce the amount or use a sugar-free alternative like powdered erythritol.
  • Nutella – The star ingredient that brings in rich chocolate-hazelnut flavor! You can swap it for any chocolate-hazelnut spread or even melted chocolate mixed with hazelnut butter for a homemade touch.
  • Dark Chocolate – The secret to a perfectly stable mousse! It helps set the mousse while adding extra depth of flavor. You can use semi-sweet chocolate for a slightly milder taste, but since I'm a big dark chocolate fan, I went with dark chocolate!
  • Hazelnuts (optional) – Adds a delicious crunchy contrast to the creamy mousse. Feel free to swap with macadamia nuts, almonds, or even crushed cookies for a different texture!

See recipe card for quantities.

You can serve this chocolate hazelnut mousse with Nutella as an elegant no-bake dessert for guests, or use it as a luscious Nutella mousse filling for cakes, cupcakes, or layered parfaits. Whether you’re enjoying it on its own or dressing it up with toppings, this dreamy Nutella mousse dessert is always a crowd-pleaser.

Hint: If stacking multiple layers, pipe a border of frosting around the edges before adding the mousse filling to prevent it from spilling out.

Variations

No matter which variation you choose, this Nutella Mousse is always a hit! Here are some of my favourite variations!

  • Nutella Mocha Mousse – Add 1 teaspoon of instant espresso powder to the melted chocolate for a rich mocha twist. As a coffee lover I love this variation so much!
  • Nutella Peanut Butter Mousse – Fan of peanut butter? Then swap half of the Nutella with creamy peanut butter for a nutty, chocolatey combination.Dairy-Free Nutella Mousse – Replace the heavy cream with coconut cream for a creamy, dairy-free version with a hint of coconut flavor. It still tastes amazing!

Equipment

Mixing Bowls – You'll need at least two bowls. One for whipping the cream and another for melting the chocolate.

Hand Mixer or Stand Mixer – A hand mixer makes whipping the cream effortless, but a stand mixer works just as well for quick and even mixing.

Spatula – Perfect for gently folding the Nutella and melted chocolate into the whipped cream without deflating it.

Piping Bag (Optional) – Helps create a beautiful, mess-free presentation when transferring the mousse into serving glasses. A ziplock bag with the tip cut off works too!

Serving Glasses or Bowls – Choose mini dessert cups (4 ounce) or ramekins for a stylish presentation. I have linked mine already, I love them so much!

How to Store quick chocolate mousse

Refrigeration: Store Nutella mousse in airtight containers or covered dessert cups in the fridge for up to 3 days. This keeps it fresh while maintaining its creamy texture.

Freezing: You can freeze Nutella chocolate mousse for up to 2 months. Store it in an airtight container and thaw in the fridge overnight before serving. For a frozen treat, enjoy it straight from the freezer like a chocolatey semifreddo!

Room Temperature: Unlike traditional two-ingredient mousse, this recipe holds its structure well at room temperature for a few hours, making it perfect for parties. However, it's best served chilled for the smoothest texture.

Top Tips for Making the Perfect Nutella Mousse Recipe

  • Use chilled heavy cream, cold cream whips up faster and holds its structure better, giving you a light and fluffy mousse.
  • If using a microwave, heat in 15-second intervals, stirring in between to prevent burning. A double boiler works great too! But I used a microwave for my convenience.
  • When combining the whipped cream with Nutella and melted chocolate, gently fold the mixture to keep it light and airy. Stirring too hard can deflate the mousse.
  • Nutella is already sweet, so taste the mixture before adding powdered sugar. You might need less than you think!
  • Refrigerate the mousse for at least 1 hour before serving. This helps it set and enhances the flavors.

FAQ

Can I make this Nutella Mousse ahead of time?

Yes absolutely! You can prepare it up to 2 days in advance. Just store it covered in the fridge and add toppings right before serving for the best texture and flavor.

Can I freeze Nutella Mousse?

Yes absolutely, but the texture may change slightly. For a frozen dessert, freeze the mousse in individual cups, then let it sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes before serving for a creamier consistency.

Why is my nutella mousse not fluffy?

This usually happens if the whipped cream is overmixed when folding in the Nutella and chocolate mixture. Use a spatula to fold it and make sure to gently fold to keep it light and airy!

How long should I chill the mousse before serving?

At least 1 hour in the fridge for the best texture, but if you have more time, 2-3 hours will make it even firmer and more decadent.

Can I use milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate?

Yes of course! Milk chocolate will make the mousse sweeter and creamier, while dark chocolate adds a deeper, more intense chocolate flavor. Choose based on your preference.
