WHY YOU WILL LOVE APPLE CINNAMON WAFFLES

  • Crowd Pleaser:  Apple cinnamon waffles, fresh from the iron, are hard to resist. Everyone likes them, from adults to babies. I make them at least twice a week, and no one ever gets bored of them.
  • Great Smell: The smell of cinnamon apples is nutty, warm, and fruity. It’s inviting and appetizing. One sniff and everyone will want to have a bite.
  • Easy to Make: Granny smith apples are very easy to find. Cinnamon is a staple ingredient in every home. Bringing together these two simple ingredients, you can make delicious waffles in under thirty minutes. The easy waffle recipe is quick, simple, and easy. Read instructions for details.
  • Great Nutritional Value: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, well, who hasn’t heard this before? Apples are a good source of vitamins and minerals. When made using natural and healthy ingredients, you don’t have to feel guilty about eating too many apple cinnamon waffles!
  • Kid Friendly: If your kids don’t eat fruits, you can sneak grated apple into this apple waffle recipe.

INGREDIENTS AND SUBSTITUTIONS FOR APPLE CINNAMON WAFFLES

As good as these waffles smell and taste, the ingredients used are simple and easily found in any household.

Golden brown cinnamon apple waffles ingredients laid out.
  • All-Purpose Flour: You need a base for your cinnamon apples to shine. Flour gives your waffles structure and shape. You can substitute it with a gluten-free flour blend.
  • Light Brown Sugar: You can also use other natural sweeteners like coconut sugar, or even maple syrup.
  • Baking Powder: Baking powder helps the batter rise. It also creates a soft and fluffy texture.
  • Baking Soda: Baking soda helps keep your batter light and makes fluffy waffles. Without it, they won’t be as airy as they should be.
  • Cinnamon: Cinnamon is essential for this recipe. It adds a nutty smell to your waffles and pairs up really well with apples.
  • Nutmeg (optional): Nutmeg will give a woody smell to your waffles and bring out the sweetness of the apples.
  • Apple Pie Spice (optional): This will give your apple cinnamon waffles the best aroma and taste. If using apple pie filling, omit the spice.
  • Salt: Add a bit of salt to balance out the sweetness and make other flavors pronounced.
  • Eggs: Eggs work as a binding agent in the batter.
  • Whole Milk (or Buttermilk ): You can use either full fat milk, buttermilk, or non-dairy milk.
  • Unsalted Butter: Use unsalted melted butter. Salted butter will make the waffles too salty.
  • Vanilla Extract: Add one teaspoon only. Don’t overdo it because we already have a lot of flavorings in this waffles recipe.
  • Granny Smith Apples: Use fresh green apples. You can also use red apples or frozen apples if you have them.

See recipe card for quantities.

VARIATIONS WITH THIS EASY HOMEMADE WAFFLE RECIPE

Although apple cinnamon waffles are a super hit breakfast and snack option, doing them everyday can be too much. Here are a few variations that you can try at home for a delicious and easy waffle recipe:

  • Belgian Chocolate and Apple Waffles: If you’re making these homemade waffles for kids, you can use big, generous chunks of belgian chocolate. They’ll love the gooey texture and the sweetness.
  • Coffee Cinnamon Waffles: Sometimes I need an extra kick to wake myself up in the morning. On such days, you can add coffee to your waffle batter. This is a delicious breakfast option on weekdays.
  • Apple Cinnamon Oats Waffles: For this variation, you only need to switch all purpose flour with oat flour. The rest of the recipe will be the same.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS FOR APPLE CINNAMON WAFFLES

Always serve the waffles hot. Drizzle with warm maple syrup and add a pat of butter or whipped cream for a comforting, simple finish. There are so many things you can serve them with, like drinks, snacks, and hot beverages. I’ll give you a few options:

Hot Beverages: Fresh, warm, and nutty waffles are best served with a hot coffee. You serve them with vanilla bean latte or salted caramel latte.

Fresh Fruits: You serve these delicious apple cinnamon waffles with some fresh fruits like pear, banana, strawberry, nutella strawberries, and blueberries. You can use fresh apple pieces for apple toppings as well.

Scrambled Eggs: For a savory twist, pair the waffles along with some Chili scrambled eggs for a sweet-savory combo that’s super satisfying.

Charcuterie Board: A charcuterie board is the best way to welcome the fall season. You can make apple cinnamon waffles to bring the best fall flavors to the board. Make some pumpkin spread as well!

Equipment

  • Waffle Maker - A good-quality waffle iron ensures crispy edges and a fluffy interior.
  • Mixing Bowls – One for dry ingredients and another for wet ingredients, making it easier to mix everything smoothly.
  • Whisk or Hand Mixer – Helps combine ingredients evenly.
  • Measuring Cups & Spoons – Ensures accurate measurements for the perfect waffle texture.
  • Spatula – Great for folding the wet and dry ingredients together without overmixing.

STORAGE AND REHEATING TIPS

Storage Tips:

In the Refrigerator:  You can store the cinnamon apple waffles in the fridge for 2-3 days in batter form as well as waffle form.

In the Freezer: You can freeze these apple cinnamon waffles for up to two months. Make sure you use an airtight container or sealed freezer bag.

Reheating Tips:

The perfect way to reheat the waffles is in a preheated oven. They’ll turn out crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. You can also use a toaster oven.

TOP TIPS FOR APPLE CINNAMON WAFFLES

  • Use a hot waffle iron to pour your batter so that the waffles will not stick to the pan.
  • If you’re making these homemade apple cinnamon waffles using a stovetop, cook them on medium heat for even cooking.
  • Always use a large mixing bowl so that the batter is evenly mixed.
  • Always fill the waffle iron about ¾ full to allow the batter to rise. Overfilling will make them hard and chewy.
  • If you’re making a big batch of waffles, don't pile them on top of each other or they’ll get soggy.

FAQ

Do apples and cinnamon go together?

Yes! In fact, cinnamon balances the sweetness and fruity scents of apple with warm, woody, nutty notes.

Can you use apple pieces instead of grated apples in waffles?

Yes. You can use small pieces instead of grated apple into the batter if you prefer that way!

Can I use pancake mix or cake mix for this recipe?

Absolutely! If your waffle mix or cake mix does not have cinnamon added to it, you can add cinnamon yourself. Always check the ingredients before adding it and follow the instructions accordingly.

What is the secret to good waffles?

Mix just until the dry ingredients are incorporated. Overmixing makes waffles dense instead of light and airy.
