INGREDIENTS AND SUBSTITUTIONS

Ingredients laid out for making pumpkin shaped cheese ball for fall appetizers
  • Cream Cheese: Unlike the classic cheese balls, we’ll be making this cheese ball recipe with cream cheese. It tastes great and makes it spreadable. Swap with mascarpone for a milder, creamier base, or use goat cheese for a tangy twist.
  • Sharp Cheddar Cheese: Sharp cheddar cheese will give it a bold and strong flavor profile. Replace with gouda, Monterey Jack, or pepper jack if you want a milder or spicier flavor.
  • Bell Pepper: Diced red bell pepper will add a pop of color and texture to this recipe, so don’t skip it. You will need the stems as well. Use diced carrots, sun-dried tomatoes, or even pimentos for color and crunch as an substitute.
  • Green Onions: Apart from color, green onions add a fresh flavor and act as aromatics for this pumpkin cheese ball recipe.  Substitute with chives for a milder onion flavor, or finely diced shallots for a slightly sweeter note.
  • Seasonings: Add onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper for seasoning the cheese mixture. You can substitute with ranch seasoning mix too!

See recipe card for quantities.

INSTRUCTIONS (For Cheese Ball Recipe with Cream Cheese)

Diced red bell pepper in a cutting board.

Dice the red bell pepper and set aside the stem to use later.

In a bowl the ingredients are placed to make cheese ball.

In a bowl, combine cream cheese, cheese, bell pepper, green onions, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

Cream cheese mixture for making cheese ball.

Mix until well combined.

The cheese ball placed in cheddar cheese.

Spread the remaining 1 cup of cheddar cheese evenly. Place the cheese ball in the center.

Shape the cheese ball to round.

Place the cheese ball in the center and roll it until fully coated in shredded cheese.

Shape to form pumpkin ridges using a thread.

Wrap the ball tightly and use strings or rubber bands around the wrapped ball to create pumpkin-like ridges.

Chill the cheese ball in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours (or overnight) so it firms up and holds its pumpkin shape. When you’re ready to serve, remove it from the fridge, carefully unwrap it, and press a bell pepper stem into the top to create the look of a real pumpkin stem.

Place your festive pumpkin cheese ball on a serving platter and surround it with crackers, pretzels, pita chips, or fresh vegetables like celery sticks and carrot slices for dipping. It makes a show-stopping Halloween appetizer or Thanksgiving party snack, and it’s guaranteed to impress guests at any fall gathering.

Hint: For the best flavor, make the cheese ball a day ahead—the extra chill time allows the seasonings to meld together and makes shaping even easier.

VARIATIONS FOR PUMPKIN CHEESE BALL RECIPE

  • Jalapeno Cream Cheese Ball Recipe: Finely dice pickled jalapenos and add to the mixture prepared following the recipe. You can skip bell peppers or leave them in, it’s your call.
  • Tangy Cream Cheese Ball Recipe: If you want to give this easy cheese ball recipe a little twist, you can add sour cream. Sour cream is tangy so it will balance the cream cheese.
  • Spinach Cream Cheese Ball Recipe: You can put in baby spinach instead of bell peppers or green onions. Finely chop the baby spinach leaves like you do parsley and add to the mixture.
  • Cream Cheese Ball with Herbs: Fresh herbs are a great variation for the classic cheese ball recipe. You can use fresh basil leaves, rosemary, thyme, parsley, and oregano. Finely chop them and add to the mixture of cream cheese and cheddar cheese. Don’t forget the seasonings.

  • To ensure the cheese ball has a spreadable consistency, keep it at room temperature for 15 minutes prior to serving.

FAQ

Which cheese is best for cheese balls?

Avoid dry cheeses. Soft cheese like cream cheese, and semi-firm like cheddar cheese, mozzarella, Havarti, Gouda, and Swiss are best for cheese balls.

Can you make a cheese ball with whipped cream cheese?

Yes, you can use whipped cream. It will make it easier to fold in other ingredients. However, don’t add too much of it. Refrigerate the mixture before shaping and coating.

What are good combos with cream cheese?

Cream cheese can easily be incorporated into a cheese ball with semi-firm cheeses like mozzarella, cheddar, Swiss, Gruyer, Havarati, and Gouda.

Made this to snack on while decorating for fall and it disappeared way too quickly! Loved the combination of cream cheese with the sharp cheddar. The only thing I changed was to add some chopped fresh dill -- so good!
